Carson-Newman senior Amanda West has been selected to serve on Omicron Delta Kappa’s National Advisory Council. One of five students selected from across the country, she will help advise the national honor society’s board of directors through 2014.

A native of Church Hill and 2009 Volunteer High alumna, West is an art major with an emphasis in graphic design. The current president of C-N’s ODK Circle is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and a founding member and a leader of a prayer group that meets weekly. She is a teaching assistant in the biology department and previously served as historian for Beta Beta Beta, the biology honor society. Her musical pursuits include piano and voice, as well as the Eagle Marching Band, Symphonic Winds and the Percussion Ensemble.

West said she is humbled by the news of her selection.

“It is such an honor, not only representing Carson-Newman, but our region as well. I look forward to taking the things I learn from the NAC and bringing them back to our local circle of ODK here at Carson-Newman. I would greatly appreciate prayers that I would be able to represent our school and area in a Christ-like manner,” she said.

Off campus, West sings with the chancel choir and is part of the handbell ensemble at Jefferson City’s First Baptist Church. She volunteers as a tutor at Jefferson Elementary School during the school year. Her home congregation is First Baptist Church Hill, where she sings in the choir and works with the sign language program. She is the daughter of Kipp and Judy West.

Founded in 1914 by 15 student and faculty leaders at Virginia’s Washington and Lee University, ODK was established to recognize exceptional leadership and promote cooperation of worthwhile endeavors. The advisory group was established in 2010 to provide counsel from four key constituencies: students, faculty secretaries, faculty advisors and alumni.
