2008 Alumnus Garrett Martin to Play DO Benefit Concert

Campus News | February 10, 2012

Garrett Martin, a 2008 Carson-Newman alumnus, will present a benefit concert for the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Delta Omicron (DO) International Music Fraternity Tuesday, February 28.

A DO alumnus who served as the A Cappella Choir’s organist, Martin earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin in sacred music and organ performance. He holds a performer’s certificate in organ and accompanying from Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, and he is presently working on a doctorate in worship studies. He has also studied organ, accompanying, and vocal performance with Michael Gailit of Austria’s Vienna Conservatory and Kristen Orkerlund of the Vienna State Opera.

The director of music ministries and organist at Austin’s Highland Park Baptist Church, Martin also directs the city’s children’s choir. During his time as a graduate student, he served as senior organist – the youngest person to ever hold the post – at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

He has served churches in four southern states, held concerts across the U.S. and performed in several countries, including Brazil, Germany, Israel, South Africa, and Thailand.

The 7:30 p.m. event will be held in Tarr Music Center’s Thomas Recital Hall. Proceeds ($5 adults, $2 students) will be used to support Delta Omicron’s scholarship fund.
