Carson-Newman names Smith to assistant vice president position
(Feb. 5, 2018) – Carson-Newman University President J. Randall O'Brien has announced the promotion of Elaine Smith to the position of assistant vice president of Finance and Business.
"Elaine has served her alma mater exceedingly well for 27 years in multiple capacities," said O'Brien. "As her area of service continues to expand, it is fitting that her title match her responsibilities. I am pleased to announce this much deserved promotion."
Smith currently serves as controller and director of Human Resources, a role she will continue to fulfill.
The Carson-Newman alumna joined the University in 1990 as Advancement Systems Manager. During her time at the institution, she has served as director of Advancement Services/campaign coordinator, staff accountant, and controller.
Martha Chambers, vice president of Finance and Business, says that Smith's organizational skills are second to none and have not only benefited her office, but the University. "In my position, you really have to have a second person that you can rely on. Without a doubt, Elaine is that person."
Her community involvement has included the United Way of Jefferson County and Douglas-Cherokee Economic Authority. She has also provided professional consulting for area businesses.
Smith earned her Bachelor's of Science degree from Carson-Newman in 1989 and her MBA in 2012 from the University.
She, along with her husband Brian, reside in Jefferson City. They have one son, Tyler.
