Mark Gonzales

Associate Professor of Education

Dr. Mark Gonzales has worked extensively in public education as an instructor, counselor, and administrator in public schools. He also has served as an instructor and administrator in higher education.

He served as an instructor, counselor, and administrator at two different school districts in Texas. He also served as Policy and Planning Coordinator for the State of Texas Board for Educator Certification and Director of Certification for the University of Texas at Arlington. Before leaving Texas and moving to Tennessee in 2012, he served on the faculty at Texas State University-San Marcos in the College of Education for 10 years, which is the largest educator preparation program in Texas.

Since moving to Tennessee, in addition to serving as the Instructional Coach and Administrator for a charter school in Nashville, he served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University. He was also a member of a research group at Vanderbilt University that was recently awarded the 2015 Alan C. Purves Award for a research article that was “most likely to have an impact on educational practice”.

Currently, Dr. Gonzales is a full-time Assistant Professor at Carson-Newman University in the Graduate Educational Leadership program. Classes he teaches include Foundations of Leadership; Management of the School, Family and Community Engagement; Professional Learning Communities; and other Master and Doctoral level classes. He also serves as a Dissertation chair for Ed.D. students. He lives in Nashville and teaches all of his courses in this area for the Carson-Newman University program in Middle Tennessee and online.

He holds a Doctorate of Education from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a Master of Education from Sul Ross State University, and Bachelor of Business Administration from Angelo State University.

Personal interests and hobbies include golfing, live music, walking his dogs, spending time with his wife, 11 year-old son and his daughter born in January 2017.
