People Matt Bryant Cheney Matt Bryant Cheney Assistant Professor of English & Director of Center for Community Engagement B.A., Carson-Newman CollegeM.A., University of TennesseePh.D., University of Kentucky Dr. Matt Bryant Cheney became Director of the Center for Community Engagement (Formerly the “Bonner Center”) and joined the English Faculty at Carson-Newman in 2018. He has taught courses in Rhetoric & Composition, Social Justice, US Literature, African American Literature, Social Entrepreneurship, Film, and specific courses for Bonner Scholars and Honors Students. As Director of the Center for Community Engagement, Dr. Bryant Cheney provides operations and programming oversight for all of the Center’s scholarship programs and initiatives, including Bonner Scholars, Faith & Justice Scholars, Faculty Service Learning, Community Connections, Service Corps, and Eagles Engage. Academic Specialties: 20th & 21st Century US Literatures and Cultures, Southern/Appalachian Literatures & Cultures, Community-Engaged Pedagogy, Social Theory, Comics and Graphic Novels.
