David Underwood

Professor of Art

Mr. David Underwood has been teaching at Carson-Newman since 1990. Mr. Underwood specializes in analog and alternative photographic processes, and teaches a variety of Photography and Art courses, including the Senior Seminar course for all majors in the department. Since 1992 he has also been our Director of Exhibitions for our Art Department’s two galleries. Mr. Underwood is a fine art photographer
whose photographs and mixed-media artworks have been included in more than 100 group exhibitions and 25 solo shows. His work is included in the permanent collections of 15 art museums around the USA. He served our Art Department as Chairperson from 2001 to 2014. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Underwood earned his BA in Photography from Carson-Newman and his MFA in Studio Art from Florida State University. His wife, Dr. Susan O’Dell Underwood, teaches English and heads the Creative Writing program at Carson-Newman.
