Mary Leidig, Carson-Newman executive director of University Relations

Mary Leidig has been named executive director of University Relations at Carson-Newman University. She joined the University June 3.

Leidig will oversee the University’s marketing, branding and public relations, growing external partners, reputation and visibility. Areas of oversight also include the website, traditional and social media, advertising and publications.

“Along with her years of successful experience in various positions, Mary brings to Carson-Newman a keen mind, sharp marketing sensibilities, and creative instincts,” said Provost and Executive Vice President Kina Mallard. “Her leadership of our University Relations team will enable Carson-Newman to tell the transformational stories of successful faculty, staff, students, and alumni.”

Leidig comes to Carson-Newman with a background in marketing, public relations, crisis communication, traditional and social media and journalism. Most recently, Leidig served as director of marketing for Maryville College. Under her leadership, the school launched its first video marketing campaign, new marketing materials and a three-year “Virtual Town Hall” initiative. The online event was designed to reach prospective student families in their natural habitat: the Internet.

Previously, Leidig was chief marketing officer for the regional 19-county Girl Scout council. As part of her work, a new partnership was formed with celebrity icon Dolly Parton, who collaborated with the nonprofit to create a “Coat of Many Colors” badge, which was distributed nationally and was based on Parton’s award-winning song.

Leidig also served as regional public relations manager for St. Mary’s Health System.

She has worked as a journalist for the Knoxville News-Sentinel, The Kingsport Times-News, and The Johnson City Press.

Work under her leadership has earned a number of awards of excellence and first-place honors from the Public Relations Society of America regional chapter, including “Best of Show.” Leidig has also earned recent awards from the East Tennessee Society for Professional Journalists and from the regional American Marketing Association. She received her degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.
