Human Resources Generalist

Time Requirements:   Full time, Monday-Friday                                 

Supervisory Responsibilities:  None     

Summary Description: The HR Generalist serves as a point of contact for university employees and is responsible for assisting with the handling of a wide variety of essential HR functions to support the employees of Carson-Newman University. This includes assisting with recruitment, employee relations, HR administration, and compliance. The ideal candidate will have a strong ability to build relationships across departments and promote a positive employee experience.

Essential Functions:

  • As an intentionally Christian academic community, Christian employees are hired to advance the mission of Carson-Newman as expressed in our strategic plan, Acorns to Oaks.
  • Poses excellent oral and written communication skills, organization skills, problem solving, active listening, conflict resolution, attention to detail.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Google Drive, and the ability to adapt to new technologies quickly. This includes managing emails, calendar scheduling, creating presentations, and handling data analysis.
  • Ability to work harmoniously with your colleagues to achieve a shared goal and positive work environment.
  • Assist with recruitment efforts including posting position openings, reviewing submissions for complete documentation requirements, coordinating interviews, preparing job offer letters, and onboarding new hires.
  • Assist with day-to-day employee relations issues including performance management, disciplinary actions, employee complaints, and workplace conflict resolution, workplace injuries.
  • Assist with communicating and administering HR policies, procedures, practices, and programs.
  • Assist with benefits administration such as medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement plans, FSA/HSA, tuition reimbursement.
  •  Ensure compliance with employment laws including wage/hour, discrimination, FMLA, ADA, workers’ compensation regulations, maintaining handbooks, posters, posting required notices, responding to agency inquiries.   Provide guidance to supervisors on compliance issues.
  • Maintain employee records and HR files, update employee information, and generate reports from the HR database.
  • Assist with coordinating onboarding, employee events, training, and development programs.
  • Assist with data analysis, employee surveys, exit interviews, and feedback processes.
  • Act as a liaison between employees, supervisors, and other university departments on HR-related matters.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in appropriate area of specialization.

Experience:   Three to five years of progressively responsible HR experience or related experience.

Required Skills:  

Excellent knowledge of HR best practices, labor laws, and regulations.

Experience applying knowledge of state and federal employment laws to assess compliance issues. Experience establishing & maintaining relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization.

Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Experience using time management skills such as prioritizing/organizing and tracking details and meeting deadlines of multiple projects with varying completion dates.
