Director of Student Care and Advocacy

FLSA Status: Exempt

Time Requirements:   37.5 hours per week                             

Supervisory Responsibilities:  None     

Summary Description: The Director of Student Care and Advocacy works within the CARE (Campus Assessment Response Evaluation) Team in the Division of Student Services. This position is focused on the Division’s response to providing support and assistance to students who have been brought to the CARE Team’s attention for reasons relating to sickness, family emergency, or mental health concerns. Some nights and weekends may be required.

Essential Functions:

  • As an intentionally Christian academic community, Christian employees are hired to advance the mission of Carson-Newman as expressed in our strategic plan, Acorns to Oaks.
  • Manage CARE Team and associated records
  • Maintain knowledge of handling confidential records according to FERPA and HIPAA requirements
  • Address and respond to student referrals made to the CARE Team
  • Manage and draft communications related to CARE Team cases with students, family, faculty and staff members, and external stakeholders
  • Collaborate with, facilitate communication between, and serve as the liaison for internal and external partners and stakeholders to provide comprehensive support and assistance to students
  • Send notifications to staff and faculty members of students who need to be excused from or receive adjustments for classroom time due to sickness, family emergency, or mental health concerns
  • Follow-up with students who have been referred to the CARE Team
  • Facilitate student’s return to the campus community after hospitalizations
  • Recommend and evaluate current policies
  • Civil Rights investigator
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Social Work, Mental Health, Counseling, or Higher Education required. Master’s Degree preferred

Experience:   One or more years in Higher Education, Mental Health, or Social Work

Required Skills:  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work successfully individually and as a member of a team; excellent organizational skills; experience in management of electronic database; proven ability in developing effective working relationships with University students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community.

May be required to sit at a computer for up to eight hours per day. Must be able to navigate the campus to perform well checks.
