Adjunct ESL Instructor Carson-Newman University is a Christian, liberal arts-based University built upon the Lordship of Jesus Christ as evidenced historically and revealed in the Scriptures. Job Title: Adjunct Instructor of English as a Second Language Department: English Language Institute* (ELI) Reports to: Director of the English Language Institute Hours: 10 – 15 teaching hours per week Summary Description: The adjunct instructor will plan, prepare, and deliver instruction in the area of speaking & listening or grammar, reading, and writing for ESL students enrolled in the ELI. Functional Description: • Plan lessons aligned with the speaking & listening curriculum or the grammar, reading, and writing curriculum for a group of students at a particular level of ESL. • Prepare assignments and assessments that ensure the progress of students enrolled in the course. • Provide timely and adequate feedback for students as they progress. • Assist Director in proctoring of Placement testing. • Assist in enlisting Conversation Partners for speaking & listening students. • Maintain grades and submit grades at mid-term and end-of-term. • Be on time and prepared for every class each day of the semester. • Hold students to all C-N and ELI attendance, coursework, and mobile device policies. Education: Degree in Education or ESL; Master’s level. Experience: Preferably at least 1 year experience. Required Skills: • Ability to interact with international students well and in a respectful manner • Patience with linguistic and cultural differences • Working knowledge of Canvas and MS Office Physical Demands: • Might need to stand for a minimum of 2 – 3 hours straight • Ability to operate a university van with safety and competence if necessary General Information: • To fulfill the requirements as noted above under the functional description in an efficient manner.
