Jeff Knox, Ph.D.
I am a Jefferson County native and graduated Carson-Newman with a B.S. in Physical Education and continued my education at C-N earning a Masters of Education. I also attended the University of Tennessee receiving elementary education and PreK-12 administrator licenses along with a Doctorate in Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.
I have taught at quite a few schools and age groups. After working as a wilderness counselor for at-risk youth, I became a full-time substitute in a K-8 school while attending graduate school. I then moved to teaching in a rare 90-90-90 school which had 90% minority students, 90% poverty, and 90% passage of the standardized tests. After marriage, I moved to Knox county to work as an Adapted Physical Education Pre-K Teacher in Knox County Schools while also teaching elementary physical education, working with small reading groups, and serving as the Building Level Technology Coordinator at several schools. After several years, my supervisor asked me to move to the new STEM magnet school to start the Physical Education Program and help with the STEM Design courses. At first, I laughed at her saying I had no interest in high school students. After some persuasion, she wore me down and I agreed to the move and it became a great experience.
After working as an adjunct for several years, I joined Carson-Newman to grow the Physical Education and Exercise Science Programs while teaching physical education methods; coaching theory; and educational leadership, technology, and assessment classes. After five years, I moved to the Education Department to help with data analysis for accreditation and the opportunity further work with education majors and graduate students. I volunteer as the Adapted Physical Education Chair for TAHPERD. I have also on several committees for Tennessee’s Department of Education helping develop the standards and evaluation systems for physical educators and evaluate literacy proposals for teacher licensure programs. When not at Carson-Newman, I can be found enjoying watersports with my wife, Lindsay and two sons, Ace and Colt. My two boys enjoy playing a variety of sports and I try hard not to over-analyze the coaching.
