Raised in Brandenburg, Kentucky, Captain Sparks graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Homeland Security. He commissioned through ROTC in 2013 into the Field Artillery upon graduation. After graduating FA BOLC, CPT Sparks was assigned to FT. Hood, TX with the 2nd Battalion 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team (Greywolf), 1st Cavalry Division. During his tenure at FT. Hood he served as Assistant Battalion Fire Support Officer for the 3rd Battalion 8th Cavalry Regiment, Fire Direction Officer and Platoon Leader for B/2-82FA, and Battalion Intelligence Officer (S2) for 2-82FA. CPT Sparks has been deployed twice; Korea (2014-2015) and Kuwait/Iraq (2017).

CPT Sparks is a graduate of the United States Army Airborne Course, FA BOLC (Basic Officer Leaders Course), Joint Fires Observer Course (JFO), Target Mensuration Only (TMO), Collateral Damage Estimate (CDE), Weaponeering Course, Joint Firepower Course (JFC), and FA CCC (Captains Career Course).

CPT Sparks’ awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Basic Parachutist Badge, and Norwegian Road March Badge in Bronze.

CPT Sparks is married to Monica Sparks of Lexington, KY. Mrs. Sparks is currently a Police Officer with the City of Killeen, Texas and has been recently selected for the position of Detective in the Special Victims Unit (SVU).
