category: Campus News Carson-Newman “Jail-a-Thon” helps raise money for missions category: Campus News | November 14, 2012 Carson-Newman College recently held its annual “Jail-a-Thon” on campus. The event, which raised over $2,800, is the largest fundraiser for Carson-Newman’s Baptist Collegiate Ministry. “This event helps to defray the cost of student mission trips,” explained Chad Morris, associate director of Campus Ministries. “Every penny adds up to sending a student to share the love of Christ.” Carson-Newman’s Jail-A-Thon allows students to submit a “warrant” for a student or faculty member’s arrest by giving a monetary donation. In order for the one who is arrested to “make bail,” they must raise double the amount of the original donation. The effort not only helps to raise awareness for student mission trips, but also helps students prepare for the spring semester. The effort was part of Mission Emphasis Week, which included such events as hearing guest speakers, as well as service opportunities for students. Morris noted he was pleased with the money raised during the week’s events, which also included an earlier fundraiser for Tiny Hands International. “Jail-A-Thon was a great way to end Mission Emphasis week,” said Morris. “It is very encouraging to see students give over $3,500 with donations still coming in.” Carson-Newman has some 15 mission trips annually, offering such ministry opportunities as assisting with construction projects, serving with children’s ministries, and helping to provide medical services to those in need. These trips provide opportunities for students to serve a community, on a local, national or international level. This year C-N was one of only five institutions to earn the Presidential Award, the highest distinction on the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.
