For those seeking an alternative teacher licensure, the M.Ed. with Job-embedded Practitioner License is offered at Carson-Newman for the high need areas of Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Special Education, and Foreign Language (Spanish).
In order to be admitted to the M.Ed. with Job-embedded Practitioner Licensure Program, the individual must show proof of employment by a school system within a 50 mile radius of Caron-Newman University and must meet admission requirements for the program. Carson-Newman recommends the individual to the Tennessee State Department of Education for appointment to the Practitioner License, which is valid for three years.
This license is available to individuals who have not completed traditional teacher education programs, but who meet content knowledge requirements in one of two ways:
An individual must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program prior to being recommended for the practitioner license. An individual may work with the practitioner license for a maximum of three years. Prior to the first renewal of the practitioner license, the teacher holding the practitioner license must have successfully completed the orientation component of the professional education core and three additional hours of coursework. By the second renewal, the Praxis II content area exam(s) for the endorsement must have been completed successfully.
