MED: Reading Specialist Online

The Master of Education:  Reading Specialist program leads to licensure as a Reading Specialist PreK-12 in the State of Tennessee.  Candidates must have three years of teaching experience and pass the Praxis Reading specialist test to complete the program and be recommended for licensure.

The following list of courses comprise the curriculum for the MEd for Reading Specialist, PreK-12.

I. Required Core, 15 hours

EDUC 538, Foundations of Leadership, 3 hours
EDUC 561, Effective Home, School, Community Relations, 3 hours
EDUC 572, Evaluation for Continuous Improvement, 3 hours
      -or- EDUC 531, Evaluation of Learning, 3 hours
EDUC 630, Educational Research, 3 hours
TESL 565, Language and Culture, 3 hours
      -or- EDUC 524, Techniques for Inclusion, 3 hours

II.  Reading Specialist, 18 hours

EDUC 536 Using Books with Children and Adolescents, 3 hrs.
EDUC 620 Emergent Literacy, 3 hrs.
EDUC 621 Teaching Reading and Writing in the Elementary/Middle School, 3 hrs.*
EDUC 622 Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Problems, 3 hrs.
EDUC 624 Reading in the Content Area/Working With Adolscents, 3 hrs.*
EDUC 625 Organization and Administration of Reading Programs, 3 hrs.

III.  Research Option, 3 hours

EDUC 600, Integrating Research and Learning, 3 hours
EDUC 660, Thesis, 3 hours
NOTE: EDUC 631 Research in the Content Field is a prerequisite to EDUC 660
which will add three hours to the overall number of hours required for the
MED degree.
