Honors House Application Process Information

About the Honors Houses

The Carson-Newman Honors Program and Department of Residence Life partner to provide an option to live in a campus house exclusively for Honors Program students.  Living in the Honors Houses provides a more private and independent environment than traditional residence halls, and allows Honors students a place to gather with like-minded students in community.  Male students live in the Fain House, and female students live in the Fite-Hicks House.

Furniture and amenities are included in each house. The kitchen includes a full oven and range, full refrigerator, dishes, utensils, and plenty of counter space!  Each bedroom includes a bed, dresser or wardrobe, desk, and chair.  Both houses have multiple living spaces where residents can hang out and host friends.

The C-N Honors Houses function within the Department of Residence Life, and as such, residents are expected to abide by policies listed in the Guide to Residence Life

To be eligible to apply for the Honors Houses, you must meet the following requirements*:

  • Must have completed at least 30 credit hours by the start of the semester for which you are applying (i.e. If you are applying for Fall 2019, you must be in the process of completing 60 hours in the Spring 2019 semester; Note: Summer hours will NOT be counted towards the total 30 credit hours).
  • Must have a GPA in good standing with the Honors Program requirements at the beginning of the semester for which you are applying.
  • Must commit to maintaining good standing with the Honors Program for the year for which you are applying.
  • Must submit to a disciplinary record check through both the Dean of Students and the Office of Residence Life. Students must be free of code of conduct violations for the academic school year prior to the semester for which they are applying to live in the apartments**.

The Application Process

Each applicant will apply for the Honors Houses individually in the semester prior to the semester for which he or she will be housed. This application will be good for one whole academic year. There is no preference given to a student who currently lives or has lived in the Honors Houses. Classification is based upon number of hours rather than numbers of years. The placement for the Honors Houses will be as follows:

  • Seniors with a 4.0-3.5 GPA
  • Juniors with a 4.0-3.8 GPA
  • Sophomores with a 4.0-3.8 GPA
  • Juniors with a 3.5-3.79 GPA
  • Sophomores with a 3.5-3.79 GPA

The top candidates will be sent a letter stating they have been approved to live in the Honors Houses. The next 5 candidates, for both Fain House and Fite-Hicks House, will be placed on a wait-list and sent a letter stating that in the case of another student declining his or her spot in the Honors Houses, they may have the chance to acquire that spot.

This system strives to reward students who have excelled academically and desire to transition from a traditional hall setting to a more independent living arrangement.

The Honors House application for Fall 2019 semester is now closed.

*Residence Life reserves the right to place students who do not meet these requirements due to special circumstances.

**Any misconduct that occurs while living in the Honors Houses may result in disciplinary action and/or removal from the Honors Houses.

***Failure to have all required items for applications will result in immediate rejection of application.
