Homeless Ministry, -- March 3-11
What do gardens, tiny houses, movie screens, teepees, and food trucks have in common? They’re all a part of Mobile Loaves & Fishes/The Community First! Village. This team will travel to Austin, TX to take part in this unique ministry setting where participants will explore community-building as ministry. Mobile Loaves & Fishes/The Community First! Village tries to take a different approach to homelessness. Their founder says that the root problem of homelessness is not not having a home, but that it is not having a community of individuals that make it a home. This ministry tries to uniquely tackle the problem of chronic homelessness by providing built-in community as well as the necessities of housing and resources. Individuals who have been chronically homeless (a year or more), who want to have these experiences, will obtain a tiny-house, RV, or even stay in a tee pee. This is not designed to be temporary or transitional housing, but designed to give individuals place and relationship as well as purpose. Each individual helps to give back to their new-found community through several micro-enterprises such as their community garden, which is then used to sell fruit and vegetables at the local farmer’s market, working on the grounds, in the kitchen, in their wood and metal forging shop, creating and selling original art pieces, soap and balm making, or even assisting with groups that come to serve. In the warmer months, they try to incorporate their “tiny house community” to the community at-large in Austin. Community movie nights are offered in their open-air amphitheater and Community First Individuals sell concessions at these events. They also run a Mobile Food Truck that provides immediate and essentials to those living on the streets.
While in Texas this S.P.O.T.S. Mission Team will assist in the on-going relational ministry in The Community First! Village, help with the community garden, serve on the grounds, potentially get to help the Mobile Food Truck Ministry, and potentially help with the Amphitheatre for community movie nights. This team may also have a very interesting and challenging opportunity to participate in one of the ministries “mini-street retreats.” This is an interactive experience that simulates what it could be like to live on the streets and to be homeless.
Many will recognize this Mobile Loaves & Fishes/Community First! Village’s description from this year’s Great Idea Lecture on Courage with Bethany Hebbard. She did an excellent job and shared several stories as to how her ministry of Mobile Loaves & Fishes/Community First! Village is living out the call, “to the least of these.” Check out her speaking about the ministry in the video below.
Finally, this team will get the full experience of living in the community village as they will be staying in one of their giant Tee-Pees for the week. Come check out an extremely unique way of doing ministry because well…“Everything’s bigger in Texas!”
