Anchorage, AK – Feb. 28 - Mar. 7
(Applicant must be willing to leave spring break 1-2 days early)
Ever thought about spending Spring Break in Alaska?!?!? This team will do exactly this! This S.P.O.T.S. trip offers a very unique experience in both location and ministry. Much of the ministry will revolve around the 60+ year old Iditarod Race! (The longest dogsled race in the world; 1,050 miles!) This team will be attending the ceremonial start of the race in Anchorage, AK and then travel to Willow to set-up the actual race start on Willow Lake. The team will serve as volunteers to assist with the historic race.
Our team will serve as parking attendants (cars & snowmobiles), traffic control (people and cars), Race Security, Dog Handling, Race Breakdown, and clean-up after the crowds have left the event. Though a historical and exciting event, this race has also become a giant “party atmosphere” where individuals use the event as an excuse for a two-week party, and too many times make poor decisions. This relational trip expects participants to be willing to share the love of Christ in a non-discriminatory way and be willing to share their own faith story while interacting with the race goers. This S.P.O.T.S. Team will be potentially serving kids at a local boys & girls club, shoveling snow for the elderly, serving at a food bank, and putting on an afterschool program at a local park for disadvantaged kids. Though the team will work and serve extremely hard there will also be time to enjoy the amazing Alaskan scenery with snow hiking, “moosing”, sledding, and potentially interacting with the sled dogs.
