Annual Departmental Awards
The Religion Department gives several annual awards to outstanding students in Religion. Below is the full list of awards.
Brewer Scholar Award for Outstanding Scholarship
Given to a Jr or Sr Religion or Philosophy major, this award is announced in the CN Honors Convocation. The award consists of a $1000 check, a framed certificate, and the recipient’s name is placed on a permanent plaque in the office suite.

Shurden Award (Outstanding Junior Major)
This award is announced at the CN Honors Convocation during the spring semester and is again recognized at the picnic. The award consists of a $500 check, a framed certificate, and the recipient’s name is placed on a permanent plaque in the office suite.

Brewer Award for best paper in Theological Research
Presented at the annual picnic in the spring, this award consists of a $50 check

Raymond DeArmond Greek Award
Given to an outstanding student at the end of 1st year Greek who shows promise of using Greek in ministry. Typically, the student is presented with a book as the award.

Zondervan Greek Award
Given to an outstanding student at the end of his/her 2nd year of Greek. The student receives a reference work of his/her choice from a selected list provided by Zondervan and the student’s name goes on a permanent plaque in the Religion suite.

Zondervan Hebrew Award
Given to an outstanding student in Hebrew. The student receives a reference work of his/her choice from a selected list provided by Zondervan and the student’s name goes on a permanent plaque in the Religion suite.

Zondervan Theology Award
Given to an outstanding student in the area of Theology. The student receives a reference work of his/her choice from a selected list provided by Zondervan and the student’s name goes on a permanent plaque in the Religion suite.

Borchert Biblical Studies Award
Given to a deserving student for outstanding work in the area of biblical studies. Not given every year, but awarded in response to truly excellent work. The award consists of a $150 check, a framed certificate, and the recipient’s name placed on a permanent plaque in the Religion suite.

Earl Guinn Award in Preaching
Given every other year to a deserving student in the “Sermon Preparation” course, or to one who shows promise in the preaching ministry. The actual award varies.

Theta Alpha Kappa Undergraduate Achievement Award
Given every other year to an outstanding member of Theta Alpha Kappa honor society. The award recognizes academic excellence, chapter leadership, and public service, and consists of a $100 check.
Palmer Theological Scholarship
The Religion faculty recommends a student who shows promise in ministry. Preference is given to non-traditional students. The actual award varies.
