Dr. Bass joined the C-N math faculty in 1995. He holds the Ph.D. in mathematics from Vanderbilt University, and obtained his undergraduate degree from Mercer University with majors in both Christianity and mathematics. Dr. Bass currently serves as the Mathematics Program Director and was previously the faculty advisor for Appalachian, the C-N annual. Dr. Bass is active in Jefferson City's First Baptist Church where he serves as a Sunday School teacher, and in the community where he serves as treasurer of the Jefferson City Swim Club.

John Burton
Position: Professor of Physics, Emeritus
Dr. John W. Burton (C-N '59) began to serve as Associate Professor of Physics and Department Chair in 1964. He retired in 2002, after 38 years of active service at Carson-Newman.

Faye France joined the School of Science and Mathematics in 2005. With her pleasant demeanor and keen mind, Faye has spoiled both faculty and students in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics as well as the college.

Carey Herring
Position: Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus
Carey R. Herring (C-N ‘65) retired in 2011 after teaching 44 years for the C-N Mathematics Department. Carey also spent the latter portion of his career serving as Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Kenneth Massey joined the C-N Math faculty in 2005. He is likely the most famous of C-N's faculty having developed the Massey Ratings as an undergraduate honors project at Bluefield College. After receiving an M.S. in Mathematics from Virginia Tech in 1999, Kenneth taught at Hollins College in Roanoke, VA prior to joining C-N. His rating system is a longstanding component of the college football BCS and now serves as USA Today's national ranking for high school football. Kenneth serves the department as KME advisor. He is also an active member, AWANA helper, committee chairman and Sunday School teacher at Mill Springs Baptist Church.

Tom O'Neal
Position: Professor of Physics, Emeritus
Dr. Tom O'Neal, a graduate of Mississippi College and University of Florida, began his tenure at C-N in 1964. He retired in 2004 after a 41 year tenure.

Mike Seale joined Carson-Newman in 2004. He received his B.A. from Wabash College and M.S. and Ph.D. from The College of William and Mary. Prior to coming to Carson-Newman, he served as an Assistant Professor of Physics at Marietta College for three years and as head of the Physics Department at Thomas Nelson Community College for two years. He has also worked as a National Research Council Associate at NASA Langley Research Center for two years where he was involved with the High-Speed Research program. His main research interests are in ultrasonic materials evaluation (non-destructive evaluation). In his younger days, and before two surgeries, he spent all of his free time playing competitive volleyball. He now spends time helping with the Carson-Newman volleyball program. When he is not busy at the college, he enjoys spending time in the shop doing various woodworking projects.

Alden Starnes joined the C-N Math Faculty in August 2001. His special areas of interest are Statistics, Real Analysis and Linear Algebra, and he has a passion for Dual Enrollment students. Additionally, he plays intramural football at C-N, is the football PA announcer and serves as Deacon, SS teacher and 6th string pianist at Mill Springs Baptist Church. In his spare time he enjoys fantasy football by managing the Cave ECG in the Blue Ridge Football Association. He holds Statistics and Mathematics degrees from Carson-Newman College, Virginia Tech and the University of Kentucky.

Henry Suters joined the C-N Math Faculty in 1994. He holds a double major in Mathematics and Physics from Berea College, a M.A. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Duke University and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. His academic interests include Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science. Henry is active in Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville where he serves as chair of the Sterchi Lodge committee. His hobbies include woodworking and home improvement.
