As a C-N English major, with either a Literature or Creative Writing emphasis, students learn how to think, read, and write critically. That is, English majors are not told what to think, read, and write but rather taught how to do those things well. The English faculty believes in depth and breadth in education, so all English majors take courses in American Literature I and II, British Literature I and II, Advanced Composition and Grammar, Critical Theory, and Shakespeare. Topics in gender, genre, and race studies are also featured. Creative Writing students take a three-course sequence of writing seminars.
