Tips for Commuter Students

Being a college or university student isn’t easy, but it is even harder when you commute. As a commuter, you may find it difficult to keep up with important information on campus, connect with other students and get involved. Here are some tips to help you get connected:

1. Get involved.

Our campus programs and events are designed for ALL of our students - residents and commuters. Just because you commute to school doesn’t mean that you can’t be involved in campus organizations. Getting involved is a great way to meet new people and to form friendships with your classmates. You will also be more knowledgeable about what is going on around campus. So much of your university experience is what happens outside of the classroom - take advantage of all we have to offer.

2. Join an intramural team.

Historically, intramurals are a HUGE part of C-N. We offer everything from flag football to Rook. It is a great way to meet new people, and to have a chance at the coveted Intramural Champion T-shirt.

3. Form study groups.

Ask some of your classmates to join you in a study group. Go to one of the local coffee shops and go over your notes. You may end up bonding and hanging out even more.

4. Work on campus.

If you qualify for work study, get a job on campus. This is a great way to get connected to faculty, staff and other students. You may also hear about campus activities you can become involved in.

5. Go to commuter luncheons.

Each semester, our Student Activities office sponsors luncheons for commuter students. This is a great way to meet other students, and to talk about issues specific to commuter students.
