    Ms. Susan Bell joined the ELI faculty in August 2014. She has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Sull Ross State University, Alpine, TX, and a Master of Arts in Teaching: English as a Second Language from Carson-Newman University. She has broad experience serving internationals through teaching overseas in Chile, Mexico, Macedonia, Italy, and Japan. She has additional experience teaching immigrants in church-based ministries in east Tennessee.

    Ms. Bell is currently teaching Level 2 Reading & Writing and Level 2 Grammar.

    Ms. Jane Busdeker is the Director of the English Language Institute and an instructor in the ELI. She has held those positions since August 2000. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Bowing Green State University in Ohio and a Master of Arts in Teaching: English as a Second Language from Carson-Newman University. She also studied at Johnson University. Prior to coming to Carson-Newman, Ms. Busdeker spent 6 ½ years teaching English at Mashoko High School in Zimbabwe. She has also taught in Thailand and China.

    Ms. Busdeker is currently teaching Level 4 Reading & Writing and Level 4 Grammar.


  • Carmen K Cartwright

    Ms. Carmen Cartwright is an instructor of speaking and listening in the ELI. She has an Associate of Arts degree in Hotel/Restaurant/Hospitality Management and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and Marketing from Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. She also has a Master of Arts in Teaching: English as a Second Language from Carson-Newman University. She taught overseas at Handong Global University in South Korea and at other institutes of education and a church in South Korea.

    Ms. Cartwright is currently teaching Level 4 Speaking & Listening.

    Mr. David Crowe has been an instructor for the ELI for more than 10 years, teaching reading, writing, and grammar. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Bible and Missions from Johnson University and a Master of Arts in Teaching: English as a Second Language from Carson-Newman University. His overseas teaching experience was in Thailand.

    Mr. Crowe is currently teaching Level 1 Reading & Writing and Level 1 Grammar.

    Mrs. Jan Hinson has been an instructor in the ELI for more than 10 years, teaching reading, writing, and grammar. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education with a major in Sociology from Carson-Newman University and a Master of Arts in Multilingual-Multicultural Education from Florida State University. She has extensive experience teaching and serving overseas in Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Italy, Russia, and Thailand.

    Mrs. Hinson is currently teaching Level 3 Reading & Writing and Level 3 Grammar.


  • Dee Matchett

    Ms. Dee Matchett joined the ELI as an instructor in August 2014. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Language with a major in German. She earned her Master of Arts in Teaching: English as a Second Language from Carson-Newman University. The highlight of her graduate student experience was presenting a research paper titled “Shooting Marbles in the Dark” at the International Conference on Teaching English in Warsaw at the WSGE University. The paper included research that she conducted with international students at CNU concerning instruction methods for teaching idioms. In the past, Ms. Matchett worked as an ESL assistant in the Tennessee public school system.

    Ms. Matchett is currently teaching Level 2 Speaking & Listening.


  • Glenda Smith

    Ms. Glenda Smith joined the ELI faculty in the fall of 2013. Prior to that, she taught ESOL in the Adult Education Department of Pellissippi State Community College for seven years. She is a Carson-Newman graduate with a BA in English and Secondary Education. She did graduate studies at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has broad experience working with internationals and programs including a past position as an advisor in the Study Abroad Program at the American University in Washington, D.C.

    Ms. Smith is currently teaching Level 1 and Level 3 Speaking & Listening.
