Weekly Lab Meetings

Leadership Laboratory is required for all Army ROTC students. The student will receive practical training in a number of topics including troop leading procedures, mission planning, squad tactics, land navigation, individual movement techniques, water survival, drill and ceremony, field craft, and battled drills. Lab is taken in conjunction with your military science classes. Leadership Labs provide a collective training environment where cadets of all MS levels assemble as a battalion and apply their knowledge and training.

Field Training Exercises (FTX)

Each semester all contract cadets participate in a 48 hour field training exercise in a military facility. The focus of these exercises is to develop leadership, land navigation and tactical skills in a field environment. During the Fall Carson-Newman students and cadre conduct their own unilateral exercise and this is largely planning conducted by students. In the Spring Carson-Newman ROTC participates in a joint FTX with several other Army ROTC Units. FTX activities include day and night land navigation, patrolling, situational training exercises (utilizing paintball equipment), confidence course and weapons simulator training.

Color Guard

Carson-Newman Eagle Battalion color guard presents the National, Army and school colors at all home Football games and specially requested events. Two rifles guard the colors as the color guard marches onto the field to present arms for the national anthem. The color presentation is brief but this is a proud moment since all eyes are fixed on the American Flag for the duration of our National Anthem. Precision and smooth execution is extremely important so we practice the routine many times before the game so we can perform flawlessly.

Ranger Challenge

Ranger Challenge is the varsity sport of Army ROTC. It is a competition designed to develop and test the esprit-de-corps, technical and tactical competence, physical fitness, team work, endurance, and leadership abilities of its participants. The capstone event consists of a grueling 2 day competition. The Carson Newman University Ranger Challenge Team trains year round for the Brigade Competition held annually at Ft. Jackson, SC. The competition has a number of events including the Army Physical Fitness Test, M -16 rifle marksmanship, squad assault course, land navigation, hand grenade assault course, combat patrolling and a 10k foot march. Carson Newman University Ranger Challenge cadets undergo intense training 5 days a week in preparation for the competition. We pride ourselves on excellence and exceeding the standard.

Physical Fitness Training

Physical training is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for one hour. It is designed to develop muscular strength, endurance and cardiovascular endurance, Flexibility, body composition, moral and team work. Student share responsible for doing PT on his/her own during the rest of the week. This allows students to alter their personal PT schedule to fit their own individual academic schedule and their own personal fitness needs. Each month an Army Physical Fitness Test is administered so students can determine their level of fitness. This system allows everyone to improve their conditioning at their own pace while boosting self-confidence.
