Attendance Policy

1. It is every Cadet’s responsibility to make up any assignments and /or tests that may be missed due to participation in ROTC training.  Cadet’s must plan ahead in order to balance the rigors of Carson-Newman Academics and ROTC Training.  Studying for an upcoming test will not be an approved reason to be absent from scheduled ROTC training, labs or classes.

 

2.  Ensure that you contact your professor prior to missing academic class for any ROTC training events including labs, FTXs, Ranger Challenge, etc.  Failure to make prior arrangements could reflect on your grade. 

 

3.  ROTC class attendance is mandatory and part of your academic grade.  No student will receive credit for any course in which he or she fails to meet the University’s required attendance standard.  The following is the breakdown for unexcused absences of all Military Science (MS) Classes.

                                                                                                                                

Tuesday/Thursday MS Classes:

1 Unexcused Absence: Drop 1 Letter Grade

2 Unexcused Absences: Drop 2 Letter Grades

3 Unexcused Absences: Automatic F

 

Monday/Wednesday/Friday MS Classes:

2 Unexcused Absences: Drop 1 Letter Grade

4 Unexcused Absences: Drop 2 Letter Grades

5 Unexcused Absences: Automatic F

 

Students are expected to coordinate with the instructor prior to any absence if possible.  Excused absences include, but are not limited to, personal and family emergencies, inclement weather conditions, bona fide medical needs, and official approved representation of the college such as athletics, student congress and assessment testing.  Absences for any other reason will be considered unexcused.

 

4.  Physical Training, Labs, and Field Training Exercises are mandatory for all contracted Cadets and Cadets receiving any type of ROTC scholarship.  All Cadets required to attend any of these events are expected to coordinate with the Cadre and Cadet Chain of Command prior to any absence.  The following criteria apply to time, method of notification, and endorsement/approval authority, and results of noncompliance:

2 Unexcused Absences: Automatic B

3 Unexcused Absences: Automatic C

4 Unexcused Absences: Automatic D

5 Unexcused Absences: Automatic F

 

5.  Unexpected absences will be brought to the Cadre’s attention and conveyed to the Cadet Chain of Command as soon as possible following the absence. Violations of attendance for required events may result in punitive action and could possibly result in removal from the program and/or loss of

scholarship.

 

6.  Although attendance is not mandatory for all Cadets, it is highly encouraged for professional and

personal development.  Attending these events and functions can only benefit one as a leader in any

aspect of life and is not limited to military service.
