Premiere of REFUGE (Children of the Trash) - A film about poverty, violence, and hope - created by Jared Belcher, Adam Collins, Jamison Price, Laken Kimsey, and Mikey Oppizzi from Carson-Newman University. Follow the stories of Mary Grace, Melogin, and Glenn – three children once trapped in extreme poverty, now given care, education, and a future. Journey to their homes in a garbage dump, coastal cardboard shelters, and mountain-side communities. See a culture and land as beautiful and rich as your own. Hear the struggle of their young stories first hand as told by their families, social workers, an...d teachers as we try to identify the causes of extreme poverty in the Philippines and the fight against it. Witness the power of hope and the groundwork of fundamental change in their communities.
Refuge is a film that will unchain the powerful stories of the children of the trash that, hopefully, will change a little something in us all.
8:00p.m. – Midnight GLOBAL COFFEE HOUSE, at The Creek
Global Outreach is so excited for our first coffee house of 2013! This coffee house is especially significant to us, as we will be participating in CN's first Social Justice Week. Just like any coffee house, we will have an open mic available with free coffee on the side. We are expecting some new and creative ways to advocate for the injustice in the world. Following the premiere of the Refuge film, Jared Belcher will be there to share more of his insight behind the Refuge project. In addition to Jared, we are expecting to have a panel available for a question and answer time regarding the film, the Philippines, or poverty in general. We are asking for a $2 donation at the door so that we can help financially support Jared and the Refuge team's efforts to create a voice for these stories. Please join us at the Creek as we reflect on the things you have seen and heard during Social Justice Week. Please consider sharing those with us by means of poetry, music, or any other creative art forms! Keep up with our Twitter and Facebook page over the next couple of weeks as we continue to reveal more exciting details!
