MAJOR EXPLORATION
So, what are you going to do with your life? Some students start college knowing exactly what they want to major in. Others may have a career goal, but no knowledge of what major will get them there. Some have no clue. Many find themselves switching majors during college, maybe two or three times. Here are some tips, no matter where you fall in this range.
WHAT IS A COLLEGE MAJOR?
You are required to major in a specific academic subject to demonstrate sustained, high level knowledge in that particular area. Many students have two majors, or a major and a minor.
WHEN SHOULD I DECLARE A MAJOR?
It is perfectly fine to start college as an undecided major. At C-N, you are required to declare a major by the end of your sophomore year (64 hours). If you are particularly interested in a “strict” major, such as Music, Nursing, Athletic Training, or Education, you should declare that major immediately. These majors start their major-specific class work in the freshman year, and you could get behind if you declare one of them later.
HOW DO I CHOOSE?
First and second year students usually take general education courses while they are deciding on a major. After your first two years, you should have most of your general education courses completed, and your coursework becomes more focused and specific. So, take classes that sound interesting to you - you never know what you will find.
WHAT IF I WANT TO GO TO GRADUATE SCHOOL?
If you think law school, medical school or some other professional school is in your future, C-N offers many pre-professional programs. Your advisor will be well versed in the pre-requisites you will need to gain admission to your program of choice. He/she will help you choose a major that will be fit your needs.
DOES MY MAJOR DICTATE MY PROFESSION?
Sometimes. If you choose nursing, athletic training, accounting, education, etc., you’re learning a specific trade, and will likely continue with that. All of our majors will prepare you for a range of careers. That is the beauty of a liberal arts education.
WHAT IS A LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION?
Basically, it means that you will obtain a broad based education. We want you to graduate from Carson-Newman being able to think on your own, to communicate effectively and to serve in your community. No matter what your major is, you will take classes in several areas, such as speech, English, math, and religion, just to name a few. You will leave C-N with a well rounded view of yourself and the world in which you live.
