427. Religion and Film, 3 hours Offered periodically
Study of the role of film in religion with emphasis on how religion is viewed in film, as well as the methodologies and issues of religious beliefs and Christian theology as they are depicted in the popular cinema. Course may be repeated with change of content. Same as FILM 427.
449. Introduction to Pastoral Theology and Care, 3 hours, Spring
This course introduces students to the theologies and practices that inform the discipline of pastoral and spiritual care. Particular attention will be given to the theories connected to the modern, twentieth century pastoral care movement. The course will also explore specific human needs addressed by the discipline of pastoral care, such as death, illness, trauma, and transitional rites of passage.

Survey of world religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Shinto, Judaism, Hinduism and
others, relating beliefs to major events in history and current affairs.
322. Contemporary Religious Movements, 3 hours, Spring as needed
The study will inquire into the diverse religious groups current in the contemporary world, especially
in the USA. An analysis of religious pluralism will provide the basis for a comprehensive
treatment of Mormonism, Jehovahs Witnesses, The Unification Church (the Moonies), New Age
and Transcendental Meditation. To a lesser degree, the study will encompass Native American Religions,
American Islam, Bahai, Scientology, etc.
323. New Age Movements, 2 hours, Spring as needed
Survey of New Age and Millennial Movements active in the contemporary world. Particular focus
will be given to movements influential in the U.S.A.
324. Islam, 2 hours, Spring as needed
A comprehensive examination of the faith and practice of Muslims. In addition to the text (a secondary
source), the student will also read from an English translation of the Quran and other primary
Islamic sources.
329. Denominations in America, 3 hours, Spring
An introduction to the origins, distinctive beliefs, and influence of selected denominations in America.
404. Nonwestern Religious Thought, 3 hours, Once every 2-3 years
Examines the conceptual component in various Eastern religions. The student will read extensively
from the sacred writings of these religions and seek to formulate the principles which are basic to
them. Comparative studies will be encouraged. Same as PHIL 404.
420. Archaeology of Palestine, 3 hours, As needed
An introduction to the methods and results of the excavation of ancient sites in the land of Palestine
and its neighbors. Suggested for students desiring to participate in Carson-Newman Colleges archaeological
dig in Jordan.

Practical missionary experience in a supervised, cross-cultural ministry setting. Involves reading,
journaling, and reflection upon the practice of missions. Requires department approval. May be
repeated to a maximum of 3 hours. Prerequisites: REL 450 and 451, instructor's consent.
