Admission Requirements

The overall goal of the Master of Science in Nursing degree program is to prepare the baccalaureate nurse for advanced practice roles in nursing within the context of Christian beliefs, values, and behaviors.

Outcomes for Family Nurse Practitioner

• Demonstrates competent advanced clinical practice nursing skills within existing of emerging health care delivery systems.
• Demonstrates Christian leadership in guiding and teaching clients and families, and facilitating the development of community systems, in collaboration with other providers, in the provision and management of client care.
• Provides consultation and care to individuals, families and communities within the contexts of cultural awareness, social concern, aesthetic sensitivity and personal responsibility for health.
•Uses research activities and scholarly work to improve and evaluate nursing practices and client outcomes.
• Demonstrates personal Christian values and ethical conduct in the exercise of clinical practice and professional leadership.
• Serves, through collaboration and informed leadership, as a change agent within the profession.
• Demonstrates the use of independent decision making and critical thinking skills in the advanced practice of nursing and health care delivery.

Outcomes: Nurse Educator

• Establishes an academic and clinical environment that provides leadership in curriculum, instruction, and evaluation within the contexts of cultural awareness, social concern, aesthetic sensitivity, nursing education, and personal responsibility for the learning of students.
• Demonstrates Christian values and ethical conduct in the exercise of nursing education and professional leadership.
• Uses current research findings and scholarly work to improve and evaluate the science of nursing and nursing education.
• Serves, through collaboration and informal leadership as a change agent within the profession of nursing and education.
• Demonstrates the use of independent decision making and critical thinking skills in the development of curricula based on the mission of the program and institution in the advanced practice of nursing and education.
• Demonstrates a collaborative approach to improve societal and health care needs through nursing education to facilitate the enactment of best practices.

Admission Requirements for the Master of Science in Nursing degree are:

• A bachelor's degree in nursing from a four-year NLN or CCNE accredited program
• Grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4 point scale in all undergraduate work.
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogy Test within 5 years of application.
• One official transcript from all previous undergraduate and graduate colleges and/or university course work.
• Three letters of recommendation attesting to employment history, academic performance, and moral character.
• Current active registered nurse licensure in Tennessee
• The equivalent of one year of full-time professional nursing employment within the five year period prior to application for admission is preferred.
• A letter of personal goals and aspirations.
• Students must submit an Application for Admission to the Carson-Newman Graduate Education Office no later than July 15.
