The overall goal of the Master of Science in Counseling is to prepare professionals who seek careers in the mental health and educational fields. The degree is structured within the context of Christian beliefs, values, and behaviors. This degree has several tracts, including the MS in Counseling, the MS in School Counseling, and the MS in Counseling with a concentration in Pastoral Care.

Master of Science in Counseling

The Master of Science in Counseling is designed to prepare students who desire training in counseling/psychotherapy and wish to provide such services to individuals, couples, groups, and families. The program integrates an interdisciplinary approach, with principles of the Christian faith and the practice of professional counseling. The program prepares students for a wide range of vocational options in the mental health field as well as licensure as a Professional Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist.

Master of Science in Counseling/Spiritual Guidance and Care Track

The purpose of the Spiritual Guidance and Care track is to educate students to be able to foster the spiritual growth of others, as well to be able to deliver spiritual and pastoral care to persons in crisis and need. A student completing the MS in Counseling with the Spiritual Guidance and Care track would be equipped to pursue licensure as an LPC or LMFT and integrate spirituality into their therapeutic practice, as well as add to their practice the ministry of spiritual direction and guidance. Students would also be equipped to serve as ministers of spiritual formation and pastoral care on church staffs.

Today, the changing needs of our society and educational systems require the development of new and innovative approaches to school counselor preparation. Carson-Newman's school counseling faculty members have been leaders and innovators in the development of school counseling programs at all grade levels throughout their careers. For them, the mentorship of students is a high priority and includes quality training combined with service to professional organizations, the college, and the community. Graduates are equipped with the skills and training to become leaders as professional school counselors in diverse settings.
