The overall goal of the Master of Science in Counseling is to prepare professionals who seek careers in the mental health and educational fields. The degree is structured within the context of Christian beliefs, values, and behaviors. This degree has several tracts, including the MS in Counseling, the MS in School Counseling, and the MS in Counseling with a concentration in Pastoral Care.

Master of Science in Counseling

The Master of Science in Counseling is designed to prepare students who desire training in counseling/psychotherapy and wish to provide such services to individuals, couples, groups, and families. The program integrates an interdisciplinary approach, with principles of the Christian faith and the practice of professional counseling. The program prepares students for a wide range of vocational options in the mental health field as well as licensure as a Professional Counselor or Marriage and Family Therapist.

Master of Science in Counseling/Pastoral Care Concentration

The MS in Counseling also has a Pastoral Care concentration. This permits interested students an option of completing the graduate program with a concentration in pastoral (spiritual) care by taking twelve specific hours in this area. Also, non-degree students with an existing graduate degree may take the twelve hours in pastoral and spiritual care and receive a non-degree certificate in pastoral and spiritual care.

Master of Science/School Counseling

Since its inception at Carson-Newman College, the graduate program in education has prepared school counselors for service within the public schools. Today, the changing needs of our society and more specifically of our educational system demand developing new and innovative ways to prepare school counselors for their role in public education.
