Dr. Jeremy Buckner

(June 12, 2017) – Carson-Newman University’s Dr. Jeremy Buckner, dean of Adult and Graduate Studies, has been selected by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) to participate in its 2017–2018 Senior Leadership Academy.

Buckner is among 45 mid-level higher education administrators chosen for the yearlong program, having been identified by their institutions as having the potential for senior leadership positions. The academy is designed to prepare prospective leaders to assume positions as chief officers in any higher education institutional division, including academic affairs, student affairs, finance, enrollment management or advancement.

Buckner will participate in November’s opening seminar in San Antonio, Texas, then spend the academic year participating in webinars, engaging in a series of readings and case studies, and working in a mentoring program. A closing session will be summer 2018 in Washington, DC.

Buckner earned BM, MM and PhD degrees from Texas Tech University before joining C-N’s faculty in 2008. He served as chair of the Music Department before his 2015 appointment as dean of Adult and Graduate Studies.

“We will benefit because of the preparation Jeremy receives by participating in the CIC Senior Leadership Academy,” said C-N Provost Paul Percy. “He will acquire the knowledge, skills, and experiences critical to the work of a senior level academic administrator. It is always important to be raising up the next generation of leadership.”

Sixty-one percent of participants in the first Senior Leadership Academy cohort (2010–2011) have advanced in their careers, and 25 percent of participants in the recently completed 2014–2015 cohort have already made career advancements. “These indicators suggest that CIC is helping to meet the leadership needs of higher education by offering highly effective leadership development programs for modest fees to member institutions,” said CIC President Richard Ekman.
