Music Camp Application

The Carson-Newman Department of Music is proud to sponsor Summer Music Camp for students in grades four through twelve. Music campers may participate in Senior Honors Band, Junior Band, Beginner Band, Senior Honors Chorus, Junior Chorus, or Piano/Organ Camp during the week long session.

The Carson-Newman campus is situated in the foothills of the beautiful Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. The college is acclaimed annually in national publications as one of the best liberal arts schools in the South, and is fully experienced in summer camp operations, hosting over 8,000 students annually in summer camps and other events. Leading music educators from across the state and region will join the C-N Music Faculty and music camp staff to provide both a quality musical experience and fun week for all campers.

From Monday afternoon registration through the end of camp on Saturday, campers will enjoy a non-stop mix of ensemble rehearsals, masterclass and sectional rehearsals, structured and free-time recreation, and evening entertainment and social activities. In addition to ensemble rehearsals, campers will also have the option of receiving a half-hour or hour private lesson if desired.

Saturday evening concerts will conclude the camp, with performances by all camp ensembles. The concerts are free and open to the public, with family and friends of music campers encouraged to attend. Join us for this exciting week of Summer Music Camp at Carson-Newman College.

Music Camp at a Glance

Host School & Location Carson-Newman College is a Christian liberal arts college founded by East Tennessee Baptists in 1851. Currently, the school offers over 50 majors in undergraduate and masters programs to a student body of approximately 2100. Carson-Newman is located in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, approximately 25 miles east of Knoxville. The campus is convenient to many summer recreation activities, including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge area, and TVA Lakes Cherokee and Douglas.

Facilities & Equipment Campers will enjoy the use of state of the art facilities while at Carson-Newman. The music building, one of the newest buildings on campus, includes classrooms, faculty studios, band and choral rehearsal wings, practice rooms, the music library, computer lab, and Thomas Recital Hall seating 250. The campus is also home to the new, 130,000 square foot Student Activities Center. This complex is among the finest of its type anywhere and houses comprehensive recreation, relaxation, and study facilities, including an olympic size swimming pool, basketball, racquetball, and tennis courts, weight rooms, and lounge and snack bar areas.

Each band student will be expected to furnish his or her own instrument and bring a folding metal music stand. Only concert percussion equipment and pianos will be available from the Department of Music.

Piano/Organ Camp Piano Camp or Organ Camp will be available to students from Grades 6 through 12 who have performed intermediate literature. Instruction in piano technique, keyboard literature, basic musicianship, ensemble playing and theory will be a part of the camp. Each student will receive two half-hour private piano lessons during the camp. All Piano Camp students will also participate by singing in a mixed chorus. Total price for the Complete Plan is $360, which includes private lessons.

Private Lessons Private Lessons are available on each band instrument and for voice, and on piano. The fee for a half-hour lesson is $15, and may be elected by any camp student. Full hour instrumental or vocal lessons are available to students in grades 8-12, and the cost is $30. (Private lessons are included for piano campers.) Band or choir students with previous piano experience, regardless of age, may elect to receive an hour-long piano lesson in addition to vocal or instrumental lessons. The fee for a one hour piano lesson for band or choir students is $30.

Housing, Meals, & Supervision Camp students, except day campers, will be housed in Carson-Newman dormitories and will eat all meals in Stokely Cafeteria. Campers must bring their own sheets, towels, and pillow from home. Camp students will be housed on a two per room basis. You may wish to find a roommate who is also attending camp. Friends who wish to room together need only go through the Monday afternoon registration at the same time. Housing for Saturday night, at the end of camp, is not provided.

Meals begin Monday evening after check-in and end with dinner on Saturday - 16 meals in all. All meals will be served cafeteria style and students will be allowed to eat as much as they wish at every meal with a wide variety of choices.

While staying in the dormitories, all camp students will be under the careful supervision of the Music Camp Staff. Counselors will live in the dormitories and assist with all rehearsals in order to closely monitor all aspects of camp life.

Health Care In the event of an illness or injury to a student at camp, the staff will escort that student to the Kathleen Manley Wellness Center (adjacent to the Music Building) for prompt, professional medical care. Costs resulting from medication, x-rays, or lab work are the responsibility of the parent. In the unlikely event that a student would need hospital care, immediate transportation would be arranged. Costs resulting from hospital treatment are the responsibility of the parent.
