Admission Requirements and Application Process - Masters (MAT and MEd.) Degrees

The admissions process for an applicant wishing to pursue a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree is as follows:

  • Complete an ONLINE APPLICATION
  • Application fee:$50.00
  • A letter of recommendation from each of the following areas: academic, employment, and character Online recommendation form.  
  • Official transcript(s) of all undergraduate study [print transcript request form]
    *NOTE: Carson-Newman Undergraduates must also request the official transcript.
  • Written statement of purpose
  • Resume
  • Test scores (GRE or PRAXIS II)
  • Interview
  • BACKGROUND RECORDS CHECK submitted directly to Carson-Newman:  no second-party background checks are accepted. 

The admissions process for an applicant wishing to pursue a Masters of Education (MEd.) degree is as follows:

  • Complete an ONLINE APPLICATION
  • Application fee: $50.00
  • Official transcript(s) of all undergraduate study [print transcript request form]
    *NOTE: Carson-Newman Undergraduates must also request the official transcript.
  • Written statement of purpose
  • Test scores (GRE or PRAXIS II)
  • EMPLOYMENT VERIFICATION FORM should be completed by a Principal, Assistant Principal or school district office administrator for MEd. applicants actively employed in a P-16 setting to fulfill the background check admissions requirement.
  • MEd. applicants not employed in a P-16 setting that requires a background check as a condition of employment must have a BACKGROUND RECORD CHECK submitted directly to Carson-Newman University: no secondary party background checks are accepted.

All C-N graduate admissions requirements must be met before new students are eligible to register for any courses.

Other factors that may be considered in the admission decision are:

  • A demonstrated record of achievement;
  • Breadth and depth of work experience;
  • Leadership—demonstrated and/or potential;
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Extracurricular and community involvement;
  • Current licensure(s)
