The Horton Foote Center for the Study of Theater and Film

Fundraising for and construction of the Horton Foote Center for the Study of Theater and Film is underway.  The Center will be located on the fourth floor of the Henderson Humanities Building.  It is designed to house a collection of books, scripts, papers, and films of the prize-winning playwright Horton Foote.  It will be a point of departure for in-depth study of the work of the writer of A Trip to Bountiful, Tender Mercies and the screen adaptation for To Kill a Mockingbird

The college is in the process of finishing about 16,000 square feet of educational space to include the 4,000 square-foot Horton Foote Center.  Located in close proximity to Carson-Newman’s new Writing Center and new audio-visual classrooms, the Horton Foote Center will be an ideal space for studying theater and film.  It will include viewing stations with high definition monitors, computer for writing and researching, and specialized resources on Foote and his work.

The Center for the Study of Theater and Film is designed to foster original research and creative pursuits.  In a few years, the Center hopes to host the Horton Foote Film Festival, a showcase for aspiring filmmakers.

The Horton Foote Center is the vision of Dr. Gerald Wood, Carson-Newman’s dean of Humanities, director of the Film Studies program and a preeminent Horton Foote scholar.  Wood is author of Horton Foote and the Theater of Intimacy and editor of Horton Foote: A Casebook and a number of collections of Foote’s plays.  Resources from his own research on the playwright will also be available through the Center.

Carson-Newman is working with alumni, friends of the college, and supporters of this great writer to make the Horton Foote Center for the Study of Theater and Film a reality.  By contributing to the creation of the Center, you can have a role in acknowledging the work of this great American writer and furthering the study of theater and film.  Horton Foote has signed books that will be presented to supporters of the Center.  To support the Horton Foote Center, please contact the Advancement Office or Dr. Gerald Wood (865-471-3284),
