"Cataloochee is as fine a
portrait of a community as has ever been painted and one of the very best
historical novels I have ever read--a mesmerizing, panoramic tale of families
who settled the wild, mountainous Cataloochee region of western North
Carolina. This novel is an epic, and Wayne Caldwell is a master
storyteller." (Lee Smith)

"Cataloochee is a many-threaded weave of
colorful narratives, formed into a fascinating and powerful design. The
characters stand as staunch and stark as trees along a ridgeline and the
landscape they inhabit is as pungent and lively as a campfire. With a
single book, Wayne Caldwell establishes himself as one of America's strongest
novelists. Everything he says is true." (Fred Chappell)
