The Chitwood Center is located in the former residence of the late Julius David Hale, an alumnus who bequeathed his Russell Avenue home to his alma mater. The house will retain it's designation as "The Hale Place", as it was known during his lifetime and fondly by members of the campus family. 

The Carson-Newman Alumni Association is currently renovating the facility with generous support from Alumni and a major gift in honor of JoAnn and Howard Chitwood, who served on the faculty and staff of the school for many years. Upon completion it will be used to host alumni receptions and events, and serve as the headquarters for alumni events during Homecoming each October. The importance of C-N in the lives of its graduates will be evident throughout the Chitwood Center. Some areas will be named for graduates, some for couples who met here and other rooms will represent families that include multiple generations of alumni.
