Students may earn a bachelor of science degree by completing a total of 42 hours, including 4 hours of electives; 7 hours of additional course work is strongly recommended. Faculty advisers work with students in planning their coursework.

All biochemistry majors will be required to take the following courses:

General Chemistry (Chem 103/104)        8 hours    Biochemistry I and II (Chem 303/304)                 8 hours
General Biology (Biol 105/106)               8            Research techniques in biochemistry (Chem 491)  2
Organic Chemistry (Chem 301/302)        8            Directed readings in biology (Biol 410)                 1
Introduction to Bioinformatics (Biol 475)  2           Seminar in Chemistry (Chem 412)                        1
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subtotal 38 hours

Biochemistry majors must also take one of the following electives, depending on their intended career direction:

Quantitative Analysis (Chem 305)   4 hours           Genetics (Biol 314)                   4 hours
Instrumental analysis (Chem 306)   4                   Advanced Cell Biology (Biol 312)  4
General Microbiology (Biol 316)       4                   Physical Chemistry (Chem 401)   4

Subtotal 4 hours Total required for major: 42 hours

In addition, it is strongly suggested that a biochemistry major take one or both of these:
Statistical Concepts and Methods (Math 201)   4 hours
Applications of Calculus (Math 109)                 3 hours
