Disaster Relief Ministry – *1-11
(*Dependent upon plane ticket-- Applicant must be willing to leave for spring break 1-2 days early)
In September 2017, Category 5 Maria ripped through the U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico causing catastrophic damage across the entire island. The island's electrical grid was largely destroyed, with repairs expected to take months to complete, provoking the largest power outage in American history. The water supply has been crippled and the vast majority of the buildings effected will not take months but potentially years to build back to where the island was pre-Hurricane Maria. Forty five percent of the island already was considered poverty stricken. As of Dec. 6th, the Army Core of Engineers “Operation Blue Roof” program had only installed 26% (17,672) of the temporary roofs. The remaining portion of the applicant’s account for another 66,906 that are still uncovered and open to the elements.
This news is both grim and sobering. The good news is that Carson-Newman has been given the opportunity to serve with the Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief Team. This disaster relief team will help bring much physical, spiritual, and emotional relief to those that have not only been devastated but are desperate for both help and comfort.
“But I’m only a college student, how can help?” This may be a common thought that occurs when faced with the magnitude of depth and breadth that this problem presents itself with; however, they will have trained personnel to help direct, guide, and lead volunteers to make a difference in those who are in such large need. If you are willing, the opportunity is there and they need hands like yours to help bring this relief. You will join other BCM students from the state of Tennessee to reach out to those in need. Will you consider serving our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters in their biggest time of need?
